Buried Drums
Buried Drum Location Surveys by GeoModel, Inc.
Locating Buried Drums
GeoModel, Inc. conducts surveys to locate buried drums using various geophysical methods. The most common methods used for locating buried drums are electromagnetic (terrain) conductivity (EM) and ground penetrating radar (GPR).
Electromagnetic Conductivity Surveys
An electromagnetic conductivity (EM) or metal detector survey is typically conducted for locating buried drums made of metal. The EM and metal detector surveys are rapid and can locate metal buried drums in a short time frame. EM and metal detector instruments can locate any type of conductive metal. Results can be mapped out in the field or be downloaded to a computer and color-contoured for interpretation and report presentation.
A magnetometer can be used to locate ferrous (iron) metal buried drums. The magnetometer survey is also rapid and results can be mapped out in the field.
GeoModel, Inc. has conducted numerous electromagnetic conductivity (EM), metal detector, and magnetometer surveys to locate metallic buried drums. GeoModel, Inc. owns and operates electromagnetic conductivity (EM) and metal detector instruments, which detect any type of metal buried drum, and a magnetometer, which detects ferrous metal buried drums. Pictures of a geophysicist operating these instruments are shown below:

Magnetometer
GeoModel, Inc. uses the new metal detector which is twice as accurate as the standard metal detector.
Results from an EM survey are shown below:

Other metallic buried objects, such as buried tanks (UST) and buried utility lines, can also be easily located with the EM, metal detector, or magnetometer instruments.
Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys
GeoModel, Inc. has conducted ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys at numerous sites for locating buried drums using a GPR digital control unit and various transducers (antennas).
The buried drum can be made of metal, PVC, or any other material that has different electrical or conductive properties than the surrounding subsurface soils or rocks. The GPR antennas can be vehicle-towed or hand-towed as shown below:

Typical responses from buried tanks (UST) and buried utilities using GPR are shown below:
